When shopping around for the right CBD oil for your lifestyle, you may come across two terms that seem to be polar opposites of one another: organic CBD oil and non-organic CBD. Traditionally, modern consumers are engineered to steer closer to one over the other for different reasons: organic products appear to be healthier, while non-organic is generally cheaper than their counterpart products.
When it comes to CBD oil, those two terms have completely different connotations to how plants are grown, oils are harvested and how the final product comes to you. Should you be searching for organic CBD instead of non-organic CBD? It’s important to understand the difference between the products, and why one could ultimately prove better than the other.
Much like “organic” fruits and vegetables, you would purchase at your local grocery store, CBD oils that are certified organic are held to a much higher standard than non-organic products. This goes beyond growing CBD or hemp oilwithout pesticides or keeping it separate from non-organic CBD hemp during harvesting. Instead, to earn the “organic” label, the hemp must be grown under very specific conditions as outlined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
According to the USDA guidelines, crops and products certified as “organic” all start in the field. To even grow an “organic” crop, the soil must not be treated with any organic-prohibited substances (like certain pesticides) for three years before growing. In addition, no synthetic additives can be added to the soil to boost growth. The soil must be maintained through crop rotations, natural ground tilling and naturally-sourced fertilizers. Finally, the use of genetic engineering is prohibited – meaning you will never see an “organic” CBD oil that comes from genetically-modified seeds.
The high standards for organic products don’t stop there. Once plants are harvested, they are subjected to even stricter controls than non-organic crops. During harvest and handling, all non-agricultural ingredients – synthetic or not – must conform to a strict federal list. If it’s under the “prohibited” banner of the “National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances,” then it can’t be labeled organic.
More importantly, handlers have an incredibly difficult job on their hands: In mixed crop harvesting, they must keep organic crops separate from non-organic crops. More importantly, they must keep all prohibited, non-organic substances separate from the organic crops. Any cross-contamination could ruin a completely organic crop.
While the USDA “organic” label has been around for decades, it has not applied to CBD-grade hemp until recently. Federal legislative changes applied in 2018 more commonly known as the “Farm Bill” allowed for CBD-grade hemp to earn the “organic” designation. As a result, “organic” hemp could be grown if it met the federal standard (as outlined above) and was grown in accordance with the U.S. Domestic Hemp Production Program.
Because the “organic” designation is relatively new, it carries additional weight when applied to the CBD oil you choose. While standard products require additional processing before turning into a human consumption-grade oil, those certified as “organic” start cleaner from the moment they are grown. As a result, “organic” oils give you exposure to the full spectrum of cannabinoids withoutbeing compromised by pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or other chemical influences.
Going beyond organic and non-GMO hemp plants, you will never find fillers or preservatives any of our CBD oils. All of our plants are grown under strict supervision in Colorado, leaving little time between harvest and extraction. And while other companies use solvents or other means to extract oils from the plants, we use CO2 extraction. By introducing carbon dioxide, we can draw out the oils cleanly without the use of harsh solvents or heat. This ensures you get the cleanest full spectrum CBD oil possible.
Our certificates of testing prove how our commitment to organic delivers a better product. As proven through laboratory analysis, our CBD oil contains a high profile of cannabidiol, with no detected heavy metals and microscopically low contaminant counts.
Although the words “organic” may seem like a ruse to purchase higher-priced CBD oils, it can also mean a commitment to quality and excellence. Before you buy CBD oil, understand what goes into the process, read the lab test results, and rest assured that it means you’re getting the best exposure to potentially beneficial cannabinoids with every use.
